blank terminal on kernel 2.6 and nvidia geforce ti 4600
ive just uprgraded to the 2.6.2 kernel and i have a problem that i did not face in the 2.4.22 series...im able to start and see the initial startup stuff and get into X quite nicely...but when i exit X (not shutdown-just kill X) all i see is a blank screen...if i type startx at that blank screen then it gets back to X, so my computer is obviously still working and hasnt crashed...on a similar note...im not able to access the virtual terminals by pressing ctrl-alt -F(1-6)...
please note that all my problems start only once ive started X..im able to switch terminals as long as i dont start the X server....i had the same problem with 2.6.0... the funny thing is a few days back i had to replace the fan on my gerforce ti 4600 and replaced it with a geforce 2 gts temporarily and everything worked fine including virtual terminals... but when i re installed the ti 4600 i got the same problem all over again... ive installed and tried reinstalling the latest NVDIA drivers..i guess there isnt a problem with the drivers or my card cause it worked fine with 2.4.22...
Did you build the kernel with frame buffer support? (To get any resolution different from the default while booting up or even with an image at the boot up screen). If you did, I've got that problem once (Slackware 9.1, 2.6x and frame buffer support, so I could get a penguin at the boot up screen). If so is the case, disable that function and try to see if it works
thanks guys...yeah ill try the frame buffer support thing...btw, will it help if i install FBVESA as a module...cause i normally just build all graphics related stuff right into the kernel... and this problem only seems to affect geforce 4 and 2.6x users...
I have had exactly the same problem as whythehell explains except I am running kernel 2.4.20 (SuSE 8.2).
The fix that Megaan suggested worked fine - teh problem is now solved, bot now I'll have to do without the fancy SuSE splash screen...
