In your XF86Config-4 file, you need to replace "nv" with "nvidia" under the devices section. And you need to insert the line:
load "glx". I forget the name of the section where this line goes, but the instructions of how to do this is right in the front of the instructions you can view from nvidia.

OK sorted can now get into Kde and Gnome Ive set the run level to 5 (via init 5) so I now boot from Gui.
i solved the problem by deleting the /etc/X11/XF86config file
then starting Xconfigurator which warned me that there was no XF86config file before creating one it then said the current file was linking to the incorrect location and asked me if i'd like to fix it, as I was getting desperate I clicked yes.
Hey presto It worked and I got into X.
However I had to do modprobe nvidia to get it running so I assume I would have to copy this into a config file for it to load on boot!
