I am looking for software to download and manage my digital photgraphs. It must by Gnome based, I do not want to download all the KDE libs.

Tried GTKCam?

//edit:
Or maybe another program, but I'm not sure what it's exactly called, maybe GPhoto.

It's called "gtkam".
It's a front end for "gphoto2"
You'll need:

libgphoto2
gphoto2
gtkam

Check at gphoto's website to see if your camera is supported.

http://www.gphoto.org/
http://www.gphoto.org/proj/gtkam/

Some usb cameras can be hotplugged as a "special device".
This method allows you to plug in and use your file manager for access.

I have found gtkam not to work so well. It often crashed after downliading the first photograph from the camera. flphoto works a whole lot better and I can certainly recomend it. It does not pick up mu Fuji FinePix A203 but does auto detect my Canon 300D which is fine.

thanks
