My .bashrc has the same thing (which I believe is the default setting on any distro I've ever used; I've never changed it). When I shift the window size with the mouse I can run echo $Columns and see the change immediately, so I don't think this is the issue I'm having. The fact that the output displays just fine in the terminal unless it is redirected leads me to the same conclusion.

But, again, thanks for throwing it out there.
