Bare minimum requirements for running KDE & Gnome apps

Hey all,
I have a question that I have never seen the answer to in one place.
What are the bare minimum requirements for running both KDE apps and Gnome apps? By that, I mean what are the libraries/packages required to run apps for both these environments.
I know that each program might have their own dependencies, but there must be a base line needed to run apps on each, right? Do I HAVE to install ALL of KDE and Gnome to anything?
This question came to me when I was reading about Ubuntu Linux and that it came with only Gnome installed. What if I wanted to run Kate, for instance, do I really have to install KDE in it's entirety?
Personally, I am running Fluxbox on my machine and I use a mish-mash of apps from both environments, but I never run either in their entirety.

Thanks,
RMFlagg

At a bare minimum you would need to core library files for each (kdelibs, libgnome2, and libgtk2 I think)

I can't be exact about Gnome, but KDE requires Qt, Kdebase and Kdelibs - these are all of the REQUIRED kde packages. The Kde Help Center requires libxml, also you must have the libraries for graphic formats - libmng, libpng, libjpeg. There should be more but they are needed by many other apps, and are very possible to exist already in your installation.
