Auto Mount CD ROM while inserted

I have heard of some concept where CD drive will be automatically mounted when a media in inserted into it. Something like Autoplay in Windows...
How to implement it ?
Just mount the cd-rom on start up ??

i use gnome-volume-manager (gvm). it works at least in gnome 2.8. i guess there are quite a few different approaches to this.
