Audio broken, all programs, progress bar WAY too fast

Hey,
Running Debian on a cheapo Dell PC (pentium 4) with an integrated Intel soundcard. Running Kernel 2.6.11. Using KDE 3.3; KDE Info center says:
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.8 emulation code)
...
Card Config: Intel ICH5 with AD1980 at Oxfeb7fa00, irq 3
Audio Devices: 0: Intel ICH5 (DUPLEX)

I usually use XMMS, but NOATUN has similar results. From the command line:

bikecoop@coopcomp:~$ xmms &
[1] 22299
bikecoop@coopcomp:~$ Message: device: hw:0,0

In the GUI, Xmms opens as normal. But when I start up a track, i get no audio output and the progress bar zips through tracks at ~60x the normal speed (eg a 4:00 song goes by in about 4 seconds).

any ideas?

spencer
