Question ati driver problem

I have an ati 9700M video card. And since installing the new or for that matter any of the ati drivers from the ati sight, I have had continued hassles of the screen going completely white and then fading through the primary colors. Although the drivers do seem to work at a resolution of above 1600x1200, I cannot go any lower. And my screen can only handle at 1680x1050 being a 15.4" lcd laptop. When not using the drivers everything goes okay. But the switch to the drivers goes all wrong. I don't get any errors in my xfree logs or kernel logs either. some have thought it to be the vert and horz sync values, but since they work fine on the normal kernel drives.... I just don't know. Can someone shed some light as to wether it is the drivers or do the drivers need a different vert & horz sync value??
