Arch Linux dropping MySql as the default package; implementing MariaDB

Arch Linux plans to make MariaDB their default package rather than MySql. It was stated on 2013-03-25 that a month following would be the start of this change. I can not verify if the change has actually taken place yet.

I was wondering why Arch is doing this? Will other distros be doing this? Will there be less support for the MySql packages in the future? Any news, links, information, etc on this topic is much appreciated.

Thanks.

I know it is a fork. (Thanks for that link to a Google search page..) My question isn't what it is, it is why make the switch. I was just curious why make the switch now. I didn't know if I missed something. The only thing I could really think of is that by doing this they can assure the software stays open source. Like the creation of Ice-Weasel. What other distros have or are making the switch?

Here are two articles comparing MariaDB to MySql.
https://kb.askmonty.org/en/mariadb-v...ysql-features/
https://kb.askmonty.org/en/mariadb-v...compatibility/

Does anyone know when Debian might start to support the MariaDB package?
