  ttf-opensymbol{u} unzip{u} vino{u} zenity{u} zip{u}
There are several essential packages in there that I don't want to remove. What should I do? I've always used apt-get instead of aptitude, but I've decided to migrate to aptitude after my fresh install.

I used
Code:
aptitude update
aptitude upgrade
This is the command I used that resulted in aptitude wanting to remove packages.

I understand now that "aptitude upgrade" is a depreciated command, and that I should use safe-upgrade or full-upgrade instead. Could this be causing the problem? Also, should I use safe-upgrade or full-upgrade on a regular basis (I assume safe)?

Thanks a lot.

Pin the essential ones. Did you select the right repositories?

Ah, ok. I guess I should have thought of that.

And, I do believe I have to appropriate repositories in place.

Code:
aaron@debian:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Lenny_ - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST Binary-1 20080316-10:45]/ lenny main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Lenny_ - Official Snapshot i386 NETINST Binary-1 20080316-10:45]/ lenny main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main

deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main

I marked the packages I want to keep with the "hold" command, it worked just how I wanted...thanks for the help amani.

One other question-

Was using the hold command the right choice? Will all of my held packages not be updated in the future? How would I get around this...just unhold them, upgrade, then re-hold?
