Thumbs down apache-ssl certificate no good

i've got apache-ssl (thats libssl.so not mod_ssl.so) and it was working. but i went through the config and setup all my virtual hosts and special dirs etc. then it would not startup , error reading key. i did

# ssl-certificate --force

putting a new apache.pem into the SSLKeyFile path. still no dice. whats the procedure for making a new key?
thanks
