I have built a linux workstation connected wireless network with other windows boxes. I was wondering what a reasonable antivirus solution was. I have read about clamav, and nortons command line scanner. I was wondering if they work in a similar way to norton for windows. will they detect viruses when I'm surfing in mozilla? Can I set them up like this. I am new to antivirus world of linux. I have heard people say you don't need antivirus software cause linux doesn't have any viruses. Another people have said a few exist. Also spyware, does this exist on linux? Any info links suggestions would help.
Use the search function on this site to look for similar threads to yours. Windows viruses do not harm Linux but if you are going to be sharing files between Windows and Linux then maybe installing antivirus will prevent these viruses from infecting Windows machines. Also spyware is not a major problem because its not easy to install on Linux due to the Linux/Unix security model.
You can download ClamAV for most Distros as an RPM. I have ClamAV and Klam (KDE Frontend) running on my Mandriva box at work. You can also download F-prot free, for home users. F-Prot is not nearly as user friendly as Klam. You will either have to set up a Cron job for updates and scanning or do it by hand from the command line. Hope this helps.
