Hi guys, although there are a lot of threads concerned with alternatives for iTunes, which ones can really do it all? I mean no "I like this interface better" and "I usually stick to Gnome, so for me..."
...but which one has the best / most features!? There seem to be 100 threads with all this information distributed. Let's make one with all in it!
The same would be interesting for photo management software!
To my knowledge good alternatives for iTunes are:
Songbird - from the perspective of UI and add-on support seems to the no.1, but is in a very early stage. Library handling is good, iTunes library can be imported, and "smart playlists" can automatically look for files of a specified type and compile playlists. Based on Mozilla code. Internet radio, shoutcast, Wikipedia, artist information, and much more. Does not support editing id3 tags yet, no cddb support, no CD ripping / encoding, no MTP support, and lacks some other features.
Rhythmbox - iTunes-similar UI, GNOME, supports iPod, and since version 0.11 (still unoffical I think) also other MTP devices.
Amarok - to my mind not so intuitive UI, but can do a lot! KDE. Has support for iPod, USB mass storage, iRiver, MTP and more devices (although my Samsung YP-K3 - is an MTP device - does somehow not work?).
Exaile - GNOME, afaik does not support MTP devices, which ones - does anyone know?
Listen - very nice UI / sorting, managing, filtering features, but no support for mp3 players - does anyone know?
Gnomad2 - very simple UI with few features. What it basically does is managing files on portable devices, and for this it seems to be one of the most stable / reliable programs!
Alternatives for Picasa I know:
Picasa - very nice, user-friendly UI, good sorting functions, except one thing: in windows there is "tree view", that missing in the linux port! Also does not properly display my directory names containing unicode characters. Editing is a pleasure, supports non-destructive editing!
f-spot - GNOME, to be honest I didn't understand the tagging philosophy in this one, after importing a directory (with a lot of sub directories) of 9000 pictures, I had them all in one library, no selection but tags? Direct importing from cameras, non-destructive editing.
gThumb - GNOME, based on the file structure, basic but fast and stable browsing, importing from cameras.
So, please update the lists with your experiences...
And please no "I like KDE better and that's why I use ..." discussions - let's consider the features only!
You've covered all the iTunes equivalents I know of, but a couple of Picasa equivalents are
* Digikam - KDE, very much like Picasa, allows creating and sorting albums, viewing EXIF info, some editing features.
* XnView - Motif and XForms I think, small and fast, doesn't really build and organize albums, but shows a filesystem tree on the left and thumbnail/view panes on the right
How about Kphotoalbum, formerly known as KimDaba? It may well be the nearest one can get to Picasa.
Never heared of it. Just had a quick look at the website. That timeline function at the bottom seems to be pretty cool! What about folder / category view in a tree or list? Can it edit? Maybe non-destructive editing?
