I'm running Suse 9.1 Kernel 2.6.4 with alsa support. When I try to play a CD or MP3 file I almost can't hear the song the volume is too low. I used KaMix to check the volume and it was turned up at 80% and none of the channels was mute. Basically I have alsa installed, no error messages and everything seems to be fine but the volume. My sound card works fine, I tested under WindowsXP !. It is one those VIA chipsets built into the motherboard.
WHAT AM MISSING HERE?

did yiou try alsamixer?

Also, it should be at 100%, theres quite a difference between 80 and 100 on alsamixers.

I rebooted and now it is working... Weird....
But thanks a lot for the help!
