ALSA modprobe

Hi, I am very new to Linux and need some advice. First of all, I need a full duplex audio driver and this led to download the ALSA driver source. I am using Red Hat 9, kernel version 2.4.20-8. Managed to compile the the source files after much problems. But I am now start at modprobe stage. I got the error saying

sound.o is compiled with gcc version 2 while my kernel is compiled with version 3. This is not known to work.

I wonder if there is anyway, I can do something to just get this sound driver up and running. thanks.

If you want to build from source you need to use the same gcc version for both the kernel and third party modules, so one thing to consider is rebuilding the kernel, although it may prove to be quite a daunting task if you're not yet comfortable with Linux.

I think Redhat 9 comes with Alsa packages compiled against their own shipping kernel and they should work flawlessly without the need to recompile the kernel or anything else.

The thing is I couldn't find one compiled package that suits my kernel version. I am running 2.4.20-8 on i686

Any clue I can get hold of a rpm package?
