very helpful indeed JoseRR, i'm on slackware-current (13.1) with a 2.6.36 kernel and had the same problems with the alsa-driver.
turned to the snapshot tars and voila, compiled fine without a hitch.

Note that if anyone ends up here because they are trying to compile alsa-driver from source because they need the virtual soundcard module (snd-aloop), it will start appearing as a kernel option from 2.6.37 onwards! yuhu!
