After Ubuntu updated to 8.04 box with Null OK after log in, how to eliminate?

I updated to Ubuntu 8.04. There are no problems except on boot after name and password I get a minus sign in a red circle with "(null)" by it and an OK in a box with an arrow below the red circle. I did dmesg | less but could not see the problem. How can I get rid of the prompt?

Checked /var/log/auth.log. Found:

: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/pam_smbpass.so)
: PAM [error: /lib/security/pam_smbpass.so: cannot open shared object file:
No such file or directory]
: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_smbpass.so

Installed the package: libpam-smbpass. No longer have the error in /var/log/auth.log. Presenting problem still exists (on boot after name and password I get a minus sign in a red circle with "(null)" by it and an OK in a box with an arrow below the red circle).
