Aack! What's wrong with my kernel?!

I just compiled the kernel 2.6.7 that comes with slackware 10 and when I try to boot into it, I get this:
NTFS-fs warning (device on hdb1): ntfs_fill_super(): Atime updates not implemented yet. Disabling them.
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on hdb1

And then it freezes.

I have done "make clean" after the first time it did this and recompiled but it made no difference.

What's going on? The only drive in my system that is NTFS formatted is on hda1; how the heck would the kernel get confused about that?

The 2.6.7 kernel that comes with Slackware 10.0 is very basic and only has support for the ext2 filesystem. Chances are your using either ext3 or ReiserFS and therefore it won't load. You'd be better of compiling your own kernel. Just download the sources off www.kernel.org and follow one of the guides on this website.
