32bit SUSE upgrade using Zypper has not worked :o(

Hello All,

I have tried and upgrade from 32bit SUSE 12.2 to the latest version 13.1 and followed the guidance on the opensuse site for using "zypper".

It all went well and I performed the upgrade and it said something along the lines of "some of the software running is the old software and so a reboot will be needed to load the new version".

So I rebooted and now the PC won't boot into the GUI. I can login using one of the Command line windows (CTRL ALT F1 etc) - it still says the old version 12.2 and it's a bit slow to logon.

The GUI window (CTRL ALT f7) last message is "Started postfix mail transport agent [OK]"

Now when I login to root and type "zypper" all I get is - this is not a recognised command.

I tried "cnf zypper" and it says the directory is /usr/bin/zypper

But I cannot locate a director called zypper in /usr/bin

Is there a command line based way to get my system back - assuming I am able to actually get at zypper....?!

Did you use sudo to call this command?
It may be that you are in some recovery mode or in fact you are in the older install. I might try to use yast to see what is what or try to fix what you have.

I'm never a fan of upgrades.

running
Code:
su -
zypper dup
to go from the unsupported 12.2 to 12.3 should work just fine
BUT
trying to do a MAJOR upgrade to 13.1 will NOT work well !
and will likely end up with a non booting system

you DID do a back up ? right?

use the 13.1 install dvd to do a NEW clean install
if /home is NOT on a separate partition you WILL loose your files

Thanks for the replies so far and yes I am in sudo. regarding a major update, on the suse website it does say from 12.3 that i am running to 13.1 should not pose any problems at all.

regarding the question of backup i have not taken any because the machine is just being used for world community grid number crunching - something it is still quite happily doing on under a command line.

i have tried to run yast as well as zypper but it does not work. it is like linux does not know where to find the command or the command itself is missing

I was able to navigate my way to the Firefox bookmarks location (only thing that wasn't saved) - FTPed it over to another machine and performing a 13.1 DVD install
