Unhappy 2.6.9 hangs at bootup

I've just compiled the final 2.6.9 kernel using a little tweaked .config from my 2.6.7. The compilation was successful (in spite of the many 'integer without a cast' warning messages in the net section), but the kernel hangs after detecting the hard drive and cdrom. The cursor stops blinking and I have to switch off the power. glibc-2.3.3 gcc-3.3.4. What could go wrong?

If you pass the kernel the option pci=routeirq , does it work?
I've seen this message in the logs

PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to bjorn.helgaas@hp.com
** so I can fix the driver.

No it didn't work. I noticed the kernel resumes after 5 minutes of inactivity (when i thought it hang). This didn't happen in the earlier kernel.
