What OS should I choose for a VPS Server?

Hey LQ,

I'm looking into getting some cheap VPS hosting and they offer a few different Linux OS's to choose from. I'm thinking I'm going to go with Ubuntu because it's easy and it's what I'm most familiar with, but maybe there is a huge down side to going with Ubuntu (security?).

I want to host some websites on it, practice shell scripting, and maybe host a small game server for Minecraft.

https://accounts.serverpronto.com/ca...onfproduct&i=1 Here is the VPS I'm looking into.

Ubuntu is a fine choice, but make sure you go with 12.04 LTS (support through April 2017) so you don't have to upgrade every 6 months.

I just checked with their support staff, they say it's Ubuntu Server edition which is what I wanted. Is the server edition is essentially a LAMP build right?

Not all versions of Ubuntu server have Long Term Support (however all are supported for at least 18 months, IIRC). As snowpine mentioned, it's a good idea to go with 12.04 if possible.

I would choose Debian over Ubuntu any day. Debian is less bloated

CentOS is rock-solid.

To hell with the OS, I'd stay away from "cheap hosting".

Why would you stay away from cheap hosting? There are some good and cheap suppliers.

Depends on what you class as "cheap".

Anything under $XX,000 a year we would consider "cheap" at my day-job, but for my own stuff I've had no problems with dedicated servers costing $100/month.

For Linux VPS server CentOS is the best distro .
I have a CentOS VPS server from TheWebPole.com .I got it for 29.99$/month deal.
CentOS has all the good things of RedHat distro, which is not free.CentOS is fully free and has good Security.
