Using one MySQL database for many programs

Hi!

I am wondering whether it is problematic to let several different programs/php-scripts use the same MySQL-database concurrently, provided that they do not use the same tables?

Thanks in advance

I know, I know http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/... Sorry.

Anyways, answering my own question: Yes, it is possible. Usage of several databases is usually done purely to achieve a neat organization of contents, but is by no means required.

There is no problem running several different programs that use one data base server, but evaluate your hardware and do the maths.

i recommend users for each databases, for example, the foo aplication use the data base foodb, then create a data base user userfoo with privileges (drop, insert, alter, etc) only for foodb, don't use root.

Cheers

That and if the server that runs mysql goes offline due to power outage/kernel panic/etc then all those apps are affected by it.

What twantrd said is very critical indeed, create a good backup policy and setup some kind of replication using for example master-master, master-slave or some mysql cluster to avoid lost of data.

ZRM for MySQL http://www.zmanda.com/backup-mysql.html -- choice of open source free download or corporate support contract. If you're doing a lot of MySQL, it can save you a lot of pain and headaches.
