Understanding UseCanonicalName in Apache

Hi all,

I read the documentation on apache.org but I don't understand the meaning of UseCanonicalName and how this
affect the behavior of Apache in Virtual Host Name Based.

Someone can help we with some examples? Very thanks.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod...ecanonicalname

How does that not perfectly explain what it does?

If you turn it on, any URL which is generated automatically by Apache will use the fully-qualified hostname from the ServerName directive. If you leave it off, Apache will generate the URL with the Host: header that the client passed to it. If you use name-based virtual hosts, you want this off.

Ok but if I manage several virtual host name-based, my customers will connect
to "www.domain1.com", "www.domain2.net", etc..

In which case the canonical name will be involved? And what about "self referential url"?
Thanks a lot.

Ok, I found that this is relevant when I use mod_vhost_alias:
UseCanonicalName must be off otherwise it dosen't work properly.
There is some other case?
What else about self-referential url?
