Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit

Hi All,
I'm new to the group as i'm to Ubuntu. I've installed it without updates cos i don't know how much changes would be made to the Kernel and if will potentially ruin my chances of getting virtualbox running on Ubuntu. As its been a struggle of the last few days... With Ubuntu as base OS, I want to setup Virtualisation using Virtualbox software in the gui and not command line. Startx only gives a white DOS window, how can i get proper GUI up and running? Also has anyone setup Virtualisation with Vwmare server or virtualbox, which one is easier to setup on Ubuntu

thanks
D1

You should not use 10.10, it is unsupported and will get neither security updates nor bugfixes. Install the current version, 12.04.
If you want a GUI you have to install one, the server edition comes without GUI by default. May be easier to just install the desktop edition. Then just use your package manager to install Virtualbox.
