might want to ask your system administrator, they might not let it change for a reason.

Again, for emphasis, the problem was created without root access, so it follows that the solution must also be without root access.

Yes, but you said yourself you don't know if there's a hook somewhere, so figure out where the hook is and then there will your problem lie, I have no idea what you did to "your" machine.

Also regardless if you yourself created the issue without root, that does not mean the /etc/tmux.conf does "not" exist. You just won't be able to "see" the file without root. Well at least on my setup.

(alias tmux3="tmux attach -t tmux3"; echo 'alias tmux3="tmux attach -t tmux3"' >> ~/.bashrc)

did you follow a "how too tmux something" on the internet and type something "like" the Command above?
if so, follow the rabbit hole.
maybe check alias command? maybe the bashrc?(if using Bash, adjust acordingly)
