Thin clients with KDE or Gnome from one server

I want to setup a mack daddy Linux server and hang (preferably) thin clients from it and have a nice GUI (for kids to use).

Other than LTSP (unless you think that is an attractive option) can I run an X server on a honkin' machine with lots of RAM and Disk and then run some kid-proof workstations off of it?

I want to consolidate management, file system, security, etc.

Advice appreciated.

Well, that is exactly what www.ltsp.org provides. See also www.k12ltsp.org. Unless you want the challenge of doing it yourself from scratch?

Forgive my noob-ness

Do I actually need LTSP? Can I just run a X server and connect with a WYSE termainl that supports X or something similar?

My recollection of LTSP (from a few years ago) is that it was flaky (unstable, difficult to setup).

Have you done it?

Thanks.
