Hi, a very well-made sysadmin intro reading I'd recommend is the Slackware book: http://www.slackbook.org/
Most of its contents are distro-transparent, perhaps the booting portion and package mgmt are specific to Slax, however, if you need specifics for other distros, might look for something else on their main websites.
Another all-time favorite of mine is the Linux Documentation Project: http://tldp.org/
I don't really read that much and I'm not really interested in any books ...
I hope you don't plan on having a job / position that relies on you keeping their data / systems up. You can find O'Reilly has millions of Linux System Administration Pocket Guides. I suggest starting there. They're small / handy / and full of great info. I carry one always w/ me in my EDC.
