Unhappy Static mount point for USB drive

We only have USB key slots on the x3650 servers with no floppy drives. One of the features of the ADS application is a 'dump logs' feature which essentially dumps all the necessary logs to the floppy drive. However the dumping location can be changed and that is not a problem. What is a problem is the fact that on the 3650 servers there is no consistent name for the usb drive. That is, if one were to plug in a usb drive to the server, it does not show up as a regular name but has the USB hardware address appended to it. So the USB drive shows up as /media/usb-01:33:AF:23:B1:21. Of course this varies depending on which usb drive is plugged in. We were looking at a solution in which when a person plugs in a USB drive, the appropriate device should always get mounted to "/media/usb". This way we can configure the ADS application to dump logs directly to /media/usb and not have to worry about where it would have to dump. Can you please help me out here?

I know the above method. But it is not the perfect one

I don't know how the automounting part is done, esp. how the name is resolved. What came to my mind: (1) you can setup udev to give a consistent device name in /dev/, so that all your usb-devices should get the same name like /dev/usbslot -- but I don't know if that will affect automounting or if your devices still will get the same names. (2) I guess the underlying /dev/ entries will be the same for all usb devices, for example /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. You could take a look at autofs to mount them more or less manually - autofs can be configured to create a mount point and to mount the device if you request it, for example when you open a file browser with that address. (3) Depending on how the automounting is done with your distro I guess there will be some space to configure it to your needs, but as I have no distro that does that ...

Hope this is helpful.
