Server Crashed with Bus error

Hi Friends,

I was working on Old server with kernel 2.4.21-40 , we have dependency on this kernel as for compilation other kernel gives error Argument list too long

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...6/#post3527430

While working on this machine, All of a sudden i could find some strange noises :-

$ touch testfile
Bus error

-----------------
~ % vi t.t
Vim: Caught deadly signal BUS
Vim: preserving files...
Vim: Finished.

Bus error

------------------
init.d $ ./nfs restart
Starting NFS services: ./nfs: line 155: 6166 Bus error initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -c "$*"
./nfs: line 155: 6167 Bus error initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -n $0 -s "$1" -e 2

[FAILED]
Starting NFS quotas: ./nfs: line 155: 6169 Bus error $nice initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -c "$*"
./nfs: line 155: 6170 Bus error initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -n $0 -s "$1" -e 2
[FAILED]
Starting NFS daemon: ./nfs: line 155: 6172 Bus error $nice initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -c "$*"
./nfs: line 155: 6173 Bus error initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -n $0 -s "$1" -e 2
[FAILED]
Starting NFS mountd: ./nfs: line 155: 6175 Bus error $nice initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -c "$*"
./nfs: line 155: 6176 Bus error initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -n $0 -s "$1" -e 2
[FAILED]
./nfs: line 155: 6178 Bus error touch /var/lock/subsys/nfs

---------------

After a manual reboot , the server crashed with a Disk Error and didnt booted.

I need some expert inputs what could be the cause of this strange behavior and also if i have to eliminate the kernel dependency for compilation, what needs to be done to eliminate error Argument list is too long .

Many thnx in Advance.

Regards
Sahil

Your hardware has most likely failed, or you have components that are currently failing.

Maybe your drive interface is shot at hardware level?
