server backup with tar

Hi,

I have several rhel 6 servers. One is running Oracle, another is running a webserver. If I want to backup the server with tar, do I need to shutdown the apps running on it? Or will tar just read the filesystem regardless if the app is running.

Thanks
Randy

Stop. Which server exactly do you wish to backup?

What "apps" are you referring to?

the apps are the webserver and the oracle database.
I would like to backup the os on the server. I am fully aware that backing up the database is a completely different topic and already have that covered.

servers DO NOT run "apps" !!!!

telephones run "apps"

apps are tinny stripped down programs that can run on a telephone

servers run programs

Apache is NOT a "app"
it is a a rather complex full server suite

and a oracle DB can be terabits
it is NOT a tiny "app"

Yes, you normally have to stop services. Only one commercial program that I know of can do live state backups. Not sure how they handle databases though.

Start here maybe. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/....htm#BRADV8001

jefro,
Thanks for the help.

John VV,
Why do you nitpick and still not offer any help?
If you don't want to help, why go through the effort of hitting the reply button.
Rants and tirades don't help anyone and don't make you look smart.

Thanks again Jefro

I believe the naming convention or style of posting may be the issue.
I pointed out immediately your identification/labeling of the machines, and didn't help, and you didn't say a word.
So relax, we are all here for the same thing.

I agree with JohnVV, "apps" was mis-used here.
Web and Database Servers are not "apps".

If you want a solid backup (and opinions/technique here may vary), shut down the Web Server daemon and create an archive
of the DocumentRoot and the .conf file(s) that supports the site's DocumentRoot. After the backup of the Web server is done, and the oracle has been dumped and both are in "sync" (and verified) with each other, copy or move it off host for archival and start the Oracle daemon, and then the Web daemon. I do my web servers like so...

Oracle backups: Hmmz. I always used the Oracle c-line utilities to dump to flat files.

Relax and Have a Good Day!

Oracle should be stopped to make (cold) backup.
It is possible to run hot backup , but you will need make it run in archive mode and take archives backup.
It is possible to make crush-consistent backup with FS snapshot (flush buffers before).

But it is definitely not taring files of running Oracle.
Read mine Backup linux using rsync and snapshots
