Sendmail exited...unknown status - What does this mean?

My logs are telling me
"Sendmail exited with an unknown exit status: 1..."

What does this mean any ideas on how to fix this?

When did this happen: install, upgrade, (re)configuration or suddenly? What does you mail log say?
