Are you planning on using Linux or Windows as your server?
If you're planning on using Linux; then any mainstream Linux distribution will have a package for Samba that you can install via your package manager. If you're talking about Windows; then depending on which "edition" of Windows you have, I wouldn't think you would need to actually install any additional software. Therefore, you would just configure Windows to share whatever directories/folders you wish to share, or whatever else you want to do.
You can easily do a search for yourself if you want a guide. This isn't a paid support service.
BTW, for modern Samba server environments, you can also advertise your Linux hosts using the WS-Discovery protocol. There is wssd and wssd2 implementations... https://github.com/christgau/wsdd https://github.com/Andy2244/wsdd2
Depending on your chosen distro, there may be packages ready for install.
If you are just starting out you might consider Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server edition. The server edition means there are a no extra parts unless you choose to add the. The idea is that if it's not there it can't break. Then the LTS part means that there is support until 2025. However, with that one you can in principle keep the same server until 2030 with paid support through Canonical. Canonical offers paid support but that is not required to use Ubuntu. On the topic of paid support there is also Zentyal.
Ubuntu is not the only choice. You can use Linux Mint, Devuan, or just about any of the other general-purpose distros for free and get help learning them here.
Whatever you choose as your base for Samba, I would recommend setting the system up and erasing it a few times for practice and note-taking. Then as you become comfortable try that in the form of backup, wipe, restore from backup. You may never need those skills and backups, but they can only be acquired in advance so now is the appropriate time to learn.
