Arrow Root password locked by # passwd -l root command

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
In server(Xeon Processor with RHEL 4.4 server version) the root passwd was accidentally locked by #passwd -l root command and logout. How to recover the passwd as there is no other login to enter for data backup or modification of /etc/inittab file for single user boot. Please provide some assistance or advice, at your earliest convenience. I'm in a jam here
