Putting S/MIME certs in openldap

Hi,
I have a working openldap server and am really trying to figure out how to put S/MIME certs to some users and then having their email clients fetch them for use in encrypting/signing emails.
I've tried generating them locally (self signed) maybe i'm doing smth wrong on this part.
Ayway, i noticed InetOrgPerson has an attribute named userSMIMECertificate. I tried placing it there to no avail.
Maybe i'm generating it in a wrong way ?
I've followed lots of guides on how to generate SMIME locally. None helped, in that thunderbird doesnt fetch them.
