Pure FTPD/ Linux Servers in General Server Question

My goal is to host a Linux based and password protected ftp site that can be easily accessed through the windows based version of Firefox and/or IE.

Currently I am using Pure FTPD as a ftp server under Suse 10.2 and can start the server, configure the server, upload/ download files, and restrict access to authenticated users, ect. My problem is that I have not been able to configure the server in such a way that when configured to only accept authenticated users it will prompt for credentials and allow the user to access the files it hosts though a web browser.

-Is it possible to create a server to meet my goals using Pure FTPD? Using any Linux based server?
-Where do I go from here? I have googled this topic as well as read the documentation for Pure FTPD is their something I missed?
-How can I make this work?

*When attempting to access certain FTP sites using a web browser (ex. Firefox or IE) you encounter a login prompt before you are able to gain access to files - this is what I am shooting for. While I understand that it is (under most circumstances) considered best to use an ftp client to access files given the users of the site I am attempting to construct this will not be plausible.

Unless I'm reading your post wrong, it sounds like you have Pure-FTPD configured correctly just you're not getting a login box in the browser. Right?

In, IE, I know you have to goto File-->Login As to use specific credentials. In Firefox and Opera, if Anonymous Users are restriced in Pure-FTPD the browser will pop up a box for u/n p/w info. If not you can try putting the following in the URL/Address bar: ftp://usernameassword@ftp.server.com and that should do it.
