proggie for local (personal) wiki, w/ ability to publish on web later

Hi,

I've tried Zim and I like it. I want to make a wiki on my linux box, just for personal use. I can use firefox to interface with it, thats fine.

I just want to know, whats the best (and whats the simplest) wiki to use for this purpose ootb? I would like to be able to include photos, video, whatever. basically I want wysiwyg wiki functionality on my desktop, with the ability to publish it later on the web if I want. Zim doesn't do web pages afaik.

What are your suggestions?

(NB I'm a bit of a noob--I use ubuntu, and though I've got Damn Small booting my pc from my usb mp3 player, anything much beyond that will be over my head)

If you want to be able to seamlessly publish it to the net, you might consider running your own web-server but only accessible from the local machine. Then you could run any of the wiki software out there and access it as if it was a website through firefox. When it comes to publishing, either open your box as a webserver, or copy all the necessary files over to a webserver.

which wiki? whats good, easy--portable especially?

Hi,

can anyone help me do this? is there a good ootb wiki sw that I could get up and running on my box, served only locally?

to restate, i have never set up a web server hosting anything and i use ubuntu edgy eft.

also there are various free hosting options out there aren't there? if i try wiki sw on my box, will my wiki stuff be relatively portable to other wiki hosting options or will i suffer the eternal doom of cutting and pasting till i gnaw my fingers off?

thnks, stairway
