Smile Problems with JSF and Tomcat...

I've posted this question to a couple of Java threads, but maybe someone here can help me - I'm getting a bit desparate. If this is the wrong place for this type of question, just let me know and I'll go quietly...

I'm writing a web-based program using Java Server Faces (JSF), running under Tomcat. I'm a newbie when it comes to JSF. I tried putting a simple checkbox on the screen - it looks good But when I check the box and submit a form, I get an XML format error - it looks like the html code has an entry 'checked' instead of 'checked="checked"' or 'checked="on"' or whatever the correct string is supposed to be.

I'm using JSF version 1.1 which comes with Netbeans. I'm running Java 1.5. I looked into upgrading to JSF 1.2, but that apparently requires a new version of the Java SDK (Enterprise Edition?), and I was told that Tomcat doesn't run with JSF 1.2 - so I'm looking for help - how do I get a checkbox to work in this environment?

Thanks in advance,

nbc
