Problem with upgrading memory in Dell power edge 1850

Hi all
Actually we are trying to upgrade Memory in Dell PowerEdge 1850
it has 3 memory banks and each bank has 2 slots and it supports max of 12 gig and 16 gig we r2 4gig rams.

The box is running with Debian Os with kernel 2.4.X
we have upgraded the bank-1 and bank-2 with 2*2G.B rams total of 4 RAms with 8 G.B

The Problem is Bios is showing 8 GIG but at the operating system level it is showing about 3049 gig instead of showing 8 GIG.

any body can help

please look at the issue

Thanks

??? Debian Os with kernel 2.4.X ???

If you're going to run 4++GB, you should definitely consider scrapping your (expensive) 32-bit system and buying an (inexpensive - and probably FAR more useful for your purposes!) 64-bit CPU and motherboard.

In my humble opinion - it probably makes both technical and economic sense to cut your losses and switch over to 64-bit.

But definitely - !!!!!DEFINITELY!!!!! - upgrade your Debian!!!!

I guess PAE module is a kernel module and you need to rebuild your kernel with PAE support. You should google on how to recompile the kernel.
Till then you should look into these:

PAE mode is a kludge:

http://pacoup.com/2009/05/27/pae-vs-...t-you-to-know/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/sla...pport-pae.html

If you need >> 4GB, you need a 64-bit CPU and a 64-bit OS.

64-bit is a COMMODITY. It makes no technical and no economic sense to stick with your current environment if there's any way at all for you to upgrade.

All things being equal, you're throwing time and money away by sticking with your obsolete environment.

PS:
To use PAE, you need a PAE kernel. Easy to come by...

PPS:
The reason "the OS is showing 3049 GB" (your original post) is that you're using an old kernel. Whatever you do, UPDATE YOUR KERNEL (if at all possible)!

PPS:
I understand it's difficult to retire "perfectly good hardware".

I also realize that it's often IMPOSSIBLE to do so. For very good reasons (like "our mission critical application won't RUN on anything but this obsolete platform).

But in general, hanging on to an obsolete system is simply the Wrong Thing. The technical phrase is:

"Penny wise, but Pound foolish"
