Proactive notification of server failure using another server?

Hi all, been a while since I was here.

I work at a small company, and implemented a (probably overly complex) solution for a fileserver/backup solution:

Server 1 holds all software/files we use on a daily basis or need access to frequently.

Server 2 uses flexbackup to do daily differential backups. I perform full backups when I notice the differentials getting large in size.

I recently had the backup server crash on me, and (because I'm a VERY part-time IT guy) missed that it had failed for about a week. Yes, that long between checking the status of my servers is pretty normal.

My boss wants to get around this by having a positive-notification system regarding server failure. In essence, both servers check each other each day, and if either one fails to respond to ping or to writing a timestamp to a file(or whatever), my boss and I get an email saying "somebody just died. Go clean it up."

Anyone know of a standard package that would do the trick? I'm hoping for simple if possible, but ANYTHING is better than the nothing I currently have.

Thanks in advance,
-Hugh Eisenman

Yup. There's plenty of them out there. It was even a category in the members choice awards -- http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...e-year-695651/

Some of those are pretty hefty applications with web GUI's, graphical chart reports, database backends, etc. My choice, mainly for its pure simplicity in doing exactly what you are asking for, was mon -- http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...1/#post3402601
