Port problem on opensuse 11.1

Hi,

I have a linux firewall running, but it seems even if I open a port and restart the configuration, I am still unable to use those ports. I have tried opening the ftp port, IMAP and smtp but none seem to allow me to get through. The box is also running a squid proxy, but I thought that squid only handled http requests?

Any ideas to what could be the cause, or at least finding out what could be blocking it?

How are you connecting?
From inside the LAN, from outside? from the server itself?

Kind regards

How do you connect?
pop3, imap, ssl, smtp....
What happens if you disable the firewall?
What happens if you do
Code:
telnet IP 110
Kind regards

Thanks for the replies repo, I appreciate it.

I am trying to connect to both IMAP and send through smpt.

I tried turning off the firewall with the following commands:
Code:
> iptables -F
> iptables -X
> iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
> iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
> iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
but with no success.

If I try to telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 110 (my mail hosting provider) they block the type of connection. I cannot telnet from inside the proxy server though.

[SOLVED]

I don't know if it is best practice, but the only solution that I found to this problem was masquerading the ports in the iptables.
