Nagios NRPE : local host to/from server Nagios

Hello to All,

I'm currently using a Nagios server based on a VPS server hosted by an Internet.
I used it to monitor + alert services installed on it (http, MySQL ..etc..).

At home I have a Raspberry PI connected to my local network via an ISP provider.
Obviously this one does not have an Internet IP address.

The NRPE (Nagios Remote Plugin Extractor) architecture is the following :

Nagios Server ---> query the remote host (here my Raspberry) ---> answer to Nagios server.
Is this correct ?

Obviously in my config the Nagios server will not be able to contact the Raspberry as this device on a local network.

Is it possible to monitor it with my Nagios server with NRPE ?
Or other solution ?
Thanks for attention and any clue.

Bruno

NRPE installation on a host requires use of check_nrpe from your Nagios server to talk to it. If your local host has no IP that can be reached from your vsp host then check_nrpe on the VSP host won't be able to talk to nrpe on the local host.

If your local host has OUTBOUND internet access so that it can reach the VSP host what you might want to do is setup an ssh trust from it to the VSP host and push data periodically (e.g. via cron) from the local host to the VSP host. At that point rather than using check_nrpe on the VSP you could just write your own scripts to check the data that is being pushed on the VSP host itself.

FYI: Nagios (check_nrpe)<--> NRPE
That is to say there is no call back from the NRPE host to the Nagios host - The Nagios host simply gathers date run by NRPE on the remote host so it is a single connection from Nagios to the remote host with no call back.

Yes my local host has access to the Nagios server.
Your proposed solution looks indeed correct.

Thanks for attention
