2) News flash! sendmail, postfix , exchange, lotus notes all predate google. What MTAs do you think many of the big boys use?
Learn this: nothing is free. You pay for everything in one form or another. Free in terms of money, actually has a price elsewhere: privacy, advertisements in private email, less than optimal antispam protection, poor technical support (try to actually talk to a live body at hotmail.com).
Are you aware that just recently google groups was a source of major backscatter spam? Google does a good job, but like all companies and service providers, they have flaws. Are you aware of the enormous amount of mail that yahoo delays, often for > 12 hours ! That's not "free" either - the price ranges anywhere from mild annoyance to financial loss.
The trick is to learn to determine your requirements, and assess the landscape to make the right choices.
