Unhappy I am Confused with my /VAR folder Partition, not enough space to do updates.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me here,

I am using RedHat enterprise 4, I tried to download the updates via up2date but an error appeared telling me I didn't have enough space.

In the logical volume managment it states that the /var partition is 4.88GB, in the filesystem it reports that the /var folder contains 9451 items totaling 1171.8GB and free space of 465.8MB.

what is the output of df -h and du -sh /var ?

output of df -h and du -sh /var

df -h reports /dev/sda2 Size: 4.9G Used: 4.2G Avail:468M Used:90%

du -sh /var 4.1G /var
