Question How to Automate Build

Hello All,

i am too curious to know how servers can be build automatically(without user intervention) be it virtual or physical.

Environment in which i am currently working, servers are build without user intervention (not even a single key press at ILO or esxi like press f12 for networkboot or something like that).

What we do:
1) register server on Dns(for IP)
2) fill details in remedy tool (IP, hostname and required packages).
3) poweroff the server if required(this is only manual thing we do)

After doing that we got confirmation of server build.

my curiosity is how to do that, is there some material for reading available. if yes please suggest.

Comments are highly appreciated.

I think what you're saying is that you work somewhere, where servers are imaged to be shipped out as products, and that you're wondering how this can be so when almost no user intervention occurs at all.

It sounds like they're using a disk which was previously seeded with the OS and information relevant to make it configure itself when it boots up, or they boot off of network and have it so that when they do boot off of network, the OS needs to be installed, so that happens. As part of that, the newly booted server appears on your network, probably via MAC address, or a new system requesting IP address services; therefore you're accessing equipment which sees that request and allows you to give credentials to the newly booted server, which you do, and then the automated install process starts.

Depending on the OS, one can make it so that it can boot without a keyboard, mouse, and screen and look to the network for an address, or even to boot.

It might be helpful if you asked those whom you work with, or those who have knowledge of how this is all set up, you would get answers which would match the configuration you're working in, versus general guesses as I've done here.

Similar to what you asked about two years ago, isn't it??

Network installing through kickstart (or other pieces of similar software), haven been used for years. If the server is already configured in BIOS to boot from the network first, it'll grab an image and load it. Where that image comes from, and how it interacts with the Remedy tool at your site we have no way of knowing.

Since you work there and you're curious...why don't you just ask your co-workers????
