How do kill a process which was in sleep state more than 60 days without reboot


Hi ,

In my server i could find lots of process are in sleep state for more than a month.Kindly could some one know how to kill process which are in sleep more than 60 days

send them a SIGTERM ( the default signal of the kill command )

but don't be surprised if they simply restart

Most, if not all of these processes are there for a reason and should be left alone.

Killing them might(!) re-spawn the process as mentioned by Firerat, but you could also be killing processes that need to be up and running for a functioning machine.

Again: Don't kill them unless you think you have a very good reason (you might want to post why, if that is the case).

Most of the processes are "always" in sleep state - at least they look like, because when you ask the state your own process will run (and therefore all the others will sleep). But all of those processes have some tasks to do (usually).
Which process is that?
