High availabilty server

Im trying to setup a high availability server which is going to consist of

2 x load balancers
7 x web servers
2 x mysql servers

I so far have used this guide here for load balancers and the apache side of things.

currently i have a primary and backup mysql server which replicates itself but requires me to manually switch them over if one fails and i only every know when one fails when i get a call from a client to say the websites not working.

What im really after is the best way to have load balanced mysql servers?

I have a bit more kit laying around so if there is a much better soloution which needs more hardware dont be afraid to tell me.
