Help setting up an SMTP server on debian etch.

Hi,

I have a Dedicated server which i am using as a web and email server.

ATM I have a mail server using EXIm4 with courier. As my ISP wont allow me to send email from other domains I want to set up my server as an smtp server.

I dont know where to start though. anyone have any guides to doing this or any pointers how to start.

I would start out with postfix. It looks really easy to install. We currently use it to host Several domains right now using postgres and pam.

I have got the exim4 server up and running now.

Problem is though that if I set clamav up to use root as the user emails get through. if i use the clamav user I get the follow messages in the panic log

2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp malware acl condition: clamd: unable to connect to UNIX socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl (No such file or directory)

and the mainlog says
2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp malware acl condition: clamd: unable to connect to UNIX socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl (No such file or directory)
2008-05-22 08:09:09 1Jz4vF-0004TT-Lp H=5ad1f586.bb.sky.com ([###.###.###.###]) [###.###.###.###] F=<email@address.com> temporarily rejected after DATA

nd the clamav log has this

Thu May 22 08:08:19 2008 -> Loaded 296390 signatures.
Thu May 22 08:08:19 2008 -> ERROR: Socket file /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl could not be bound: Permission denied

I have set Clamav to be a member of the debian-exim group which has permissions on the var/run/clamav folder.

When i check as well clamd isnt running even when I try and start it:S but again if its set to user root it will connect :s

try a quick reboot. That might clear up the group permissions. Also check under the folder. Just because clamav is a member of debian-exim and has permissions to /var/run/clamav doesn't necessarily mean that the permission has replicated below that. So root , root my still have permissions to clamav.ctl

I`ve rebooted the server but it made no difference.

Its starting to really do my head in now. As I said it will work fine with clamav set to use as root but thats a security risk.
