Are you talking about a dhcp server?

I don't think so. DHCP manages IP Pool and client information not client user account information. I appreciate the idea though.

What happens to the desktop PCs when the server is down?

I have seen some discussions about having ~home directories on NFS but I don't know if that's what you want.

Perhaps you want to set up accounts for users on the server, and let them login from the desktop systems.

This can be a solution to my problem. How this works?

You'll have to do some research on the details. Here's a site I found with a google search for "linux home directory on NFS"
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/...TO/client.html

or maybe this approach is more what you have in mind
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6713
It was found with a search for "linux xdmcp remote" and is a little old, but it won't be hard to find up to date information.

What your looking for is something like NIS with a mixture of maybe NFS to mount users home directories from such server. You could also go with something like LDAP for user authentication from a central location, etc.
