from USERGATE to SQUID

Excuse me about windows topiс
The last Admin used USERGAT PROXY-server on my another WindowsXP server, (the first on the Squid,Gentoo)

I uninstalled USERGATE and then installed SQUID.
A stability of work makes better, but a Internet speed became lower the DIAL-UP,But I use ADSL 1mbit/s connection.

How to make the same speed as it is on the USERGATE proxy server?

a)but i didn't write dns forwarding, which was in USERGATE?
b)i didn't changed default settings for delay_pools.All are comment!
c) my cache_dir ufs /var/cache/squid 100 16 256

d)in the connections to the provider i wrote his DNS servers too!
