Faster LVM Backup using partimage or similar

Hi all. I've got a test Xen machine w/CentOS 5 using LVM as the storage for guests. Each guest has its own LV. I have it now where backups are simply

Code:
dd if=/dev/vmgroup/guestsnapshot | gzip -9 > /vmbackup/guest.img.gz
to a separate local disk. I would like something faster, and I've tried partimage but it doesn't even recognize my LVM devices! Is there something better out there? How does LQ handle LVM backups?

For the record, my test system is 4-disk RAID5 for OS and LVM, and 2-disk RAID1 for backup.
